Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - Tuesdays On The Fly: PDE Living Shorelines / 5-6-25
Join CU Maurice River and Partnership for the Delaware Estuary’s Jessica Klinkham to explore the innovative Engineering with Nature projects of the Delaware Estuary—a critical line of defense against the impacts of sea level rise.
Learn about the Delaware Estuary Living Shoreline Initiative (DELSI), a collaborative effort with Rutgers University established in 2008. This initiative combats the increasing loss of tidal salt marshes in the region through the use of native wetland plants, engineering-with-nature structures, and intertidal shellfish to trap sediment and absorb wave energy. This unique approach to living shorelines provides an environmentally sustainable, cost-effective solution to protect and restore the delicate balance of our estuarine ecosystems. Along rivers like the Maurice—home to some of New Jersey’s most pristine habitats, the state’s largest wild rice stands, and crucial stopovers for migrating birds—efforts like DELSI help stabilize vulnerable marshes while enhancing water quality, buffering storms, and supporting rare and endangered species. These projects not only preserve the natural beauty of places like the Maurice River but also ensure that their vital ecological roles within the Atlantic Flyway are protected for generations to come.
Don't miss the chance to dive into this cutting-edge work that is helping safeguard the future of the Delaware Estuary.
